This month features a huge event in Palm Springs for designers, Modernism Week! It is one full week of beautiful Mid-century Modern homes that are open for ticket holders to view. I have this event patiently waiting on my bucket-list, but for now I will just enjoy these stunning homes from afar. I am a huge fan of this style and era of design and I can't wait to share it with you!
Where & when it started
This design movement first started in the mid 1950s and carried ended in the late 1970s. Mid-century modern first started in Germany with the creation of Bauhaus, a school of architecture and design, and was brought over to America. This style influenced architecture, interior design, furniture design, and product design. The area most notable for having this style of homes is Palm Springs, which hosts Modernism Week. There were so many architects and designers during this period that greatly influenced the movement.
characteristics of this style
what makes it so iconic
This style is so iconic because of the mass production and how far this style reached beyond architecture and interior design. It was a huge movement that spanned a long time for a design style. There are also so many buildings, furniture pieces, and products that still stand today from that era. This style is still sought after today with so many reproductions of furniture, art, and products for sale. It is also a favourite style among designers and architects alike and is noted for it's unique and distinct look.
why it's still around today
For an era that happened so long ago it is still quite prominent today. It has become a classic design style, in my opintion at least, because it is a modern take on classic pieces. Although this style is old and may be considered "dated" it has the ability to look new, modern, and fresh. This style is extremely versatile and can work with multiple other styles to create a unique look.
I personally love this style because it looks modern, but it gives a nod to the past and almost has a bit of nostalgia associated with it. I will forever be obsessed with mid-century modern because of it's ability to look modern and vintage all at once.
Some of my favourite Mid-century modern interiors
I didn't always love this style, but just recently I have come to see the beauty in it. I love mid-century modern, for it's clean modern look, use of wood tones, and large windows. The mid-century modern that we know today is slightly more sophisticated than the original style, but the essence of it still the same. One of my favourite designers who does this style well is Sarah Sherman Samuel. She recently designed Mandy Moore's stunning Beverly Hills home and you can see how I got the look for less here.
